500 Year Flood

Cedar Rapids is in the midst of epic floods.

Over 8,000 people have been evacuated and, in some areas, water has exceeded the 500 year flood plan. A rail bridge was carried away by the current and, at one point today, all bridges across the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids were closed (including I-380). The nearest open bridge was Highway 30 to the Southeast of town. Some of the pictures coming out are mind boggling. Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, and Marion are now under orders to use water for consmption only.

The previous record for the Cedar River was 20.0 feet in 1929 (flood stage is 12 feet) and we're looking at a projected crest of 32 feet tomorrow morning.

I don't think our house is any danger, but I can't be sure about the utilities over the next week or so.

I'll stay in touch as I can!
