I watched the Clinton and Obama speeches last night and was among those that felt the Clinton speech took place in an alternate reality.
I guess it's easier to be a good winner than a good loser, but it was striking that Obama was more magnanimous and complimentary of Clinton than the other way around. You would think that, for the sake of the Democratic Party, last night would be more about Obama. Instead, Hillary was inexplicably introduced as "the next President of the United States" and was unable or unwilling to make any transition out of campaign mode.
Specific quibbles:
Her comment that South Dakota had the "last word" which pointedly, needlessly, and erroneously ignored the fact that the polls were still open in Montana. So much for "let every vote be counted." Is it any coincidence that Obama was expected to win Montana?
The continued meme of her "winning" the popular vote. I'll give the popular press some credit for continually pointing out that A.) The nomination is based on winning delegates so popular vote tallies are tangential if not irrelevant. and B.) Even so, it requires some unusual mathematical and mental gymnastics to support the claim that she is ahead in the "popular vote." Discussion here.
I also thought that her use of the phase "stay the course" was questionable.
Basically, the Clinton campaign is treading dangerously close to Baghdad Bob territory at this point.
Here is a sampling of additional confused observers.
