Scholastic rebranding

I was suprised to learn yesterday that there is currently no Geology major offered at the University of Iowa. After being offered continuously from 1858 to 1999, it was disused in favor of the more expansive Geoscience major. Marketing gimmick or long overdue? I have to ask: what would Professor Calvin think?

Interesting facts about Samuel Calvin (1840 - 1911):

  • Civil War veteran
  • Appointed as State Geologist of Iowa in 1892
  • Namesake, of course, of Calvin Hall on the University of Iowa campus. In 1904, Calvin Hall (then called Old Science Hall) was moved from the Pentacrest across Jefferson Street to its current location. The 50 yard move took 5 months but did not interrupt the building's class schedule!
  • Hired a TA in 1878 named Thomas Macbride. Macbride, who had been a friend for years, would go on to a Professorship and eventually serve as the tenth President of the University of Iowa. He got a building named after him too.
  • Held Professorship at the University of Iowa for 37 years
  • Lived at 522 N. Clinton street, the current home of Delta Delta Delta Sorority
Information gathered from the Calvin Photographic Collection web site.
